About Prepaid2Cash

Prepaid2Cash is a quick and easy way for consumers to access their prepaid and gift card funds. Customers can receive cash via direct deposit for most Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover branded prepaid card programs and gift cards such as Walmart, Nordstrom, Best Buy, and 100+ other popular retail brands.

The company was founded by FinTech entrepreneurs and is based in Birmingham, AL. The experience of wanting to redeem their cards for cash inspired them to create a simple and fast service. The company and service became known as Prepaid2Cash officially launched to the public in early 2016.

The Challenge

To create the best experience possible for their clients, Prepaid2Cash needed to be simple and fast. This meant adjusting technology to be quick in the scan of any card the user wanted the app to read.

There were a couple of things they needed to work on: the reading of flat cards, the automatic classification of cards (prepaid and gift cards), and the reading of the back of the gift cards to get the merchant, card number and PIN information.

This is where we got involved in the process.

The Solution

Custom OCR component for flat (printed) card recognition using deep learning and image processing.
Enhanced user experience and card entry workflow by automating prepaid and gift card classification with deep learning.
Leveraged image processing, deep learning, and natural language processing to extract backside information from gift cards.
