About Universal

Universal Studios theme park stands as one of the world’s premier destinations, drawing in over 7 million visitors annually. This park forms an integral part of the expansive Universal Resort, encompassing the Island of Adventure theme park and Volcano Bay.

Since the inauguration of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2010, this captivating area has undergone multiple expansions. Surpassing three out of the four Walt Disney World Resort theme parks in estimated attendance, Universal Orlando boasts an impressive financial performance, with the company reporting annual revenues exceeding $7 billion.

The Challenge

Universal needed to incorporate an interactive experience within one of the park's most visited attractions. The goal was to allow Harry Potter fans to activate props by performing 'spells' with movie-replica wands in the unconstrained environment of the park.

The Solution

  • We designed a video acquisition system with off-the-shelf components that enable accurate tracking of the tips of the wands with and without light.
  • We developed two complementary gesture recognition models to recognize spells with high precision.
  • The system recognizes gestures with high precision and reliability to provide guests with an extraordinary experience.

Impact

+7
million Harry Potter fans have yearly access to the interactive wands attraction at Ollivanders.
